What is a public IP address?
A public IP address is a unique number assigned to your device by your internet service provider. It is how the rest of the internet identifies you and routes traffic back to you. Every website you visit sees this address, and it is the basis for approximate geolocation, blocking, and analytics.
How does this tool detect my IP?
Your browser makes a request to a public IP-geolocation service when you load the page. The remote service sees your IP (because all internet requests include the source address) and returns details about where that IP is registered, who owns it, and what type of connection it appears to be.
Can someone find my exact home address from my IP?
No. A public IP only reveals the city or region registered to your ISP, not your home address. The only parties who can map an IP to a specific physical address are your ISP and law enforcement with a court order. Public services can only see the city-level location of the IP block.
Does a VPN hide my IP?
Yes. A VPN replaces your real IP with the IP of the VPN server, so the services you connect to see the VPN server's IP instead. This tool can usually detect that a VPN is in use even when it cannot see your real IP, because VPN server ranges are well known.
Why does my IP address change?
Most residential and mobile connections use a dynamic IP, which your ISP reassigns periodically (when your router reconnects, after a few days, etc.). Static IPs are usually reserved for servers, business connections, and some power users. If your IP changes constantly you are almost certainly on a mobile or shared connection.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is the older 32-bit format (e.g. 192.168.1.1, ~4.3 billion addresses). IPv6 is the newer 128-bit format (e.g. 2001:db8::1, essentially unlimited addresses). Most networks and providers support both. This tool shows you whichever your connection uses, and many modern connections have both.
